Healthcare study by
Rocio Rodriguez, a native of Salamanca and a sociology graduate from The University of Madrid, is now studying for her Masters at Brunel University in West London. She has identified her thesis subject as one that specifically relates to the British community of The Costa Blanca and, surprisingly returns to her own country to interview ‘Brits Abroad’.
Her study, core to her Masters Degree in Social Services, specifically looks at the social wellbeing of the foreign community. How do we prepare for old age, does the Spanish Health Service provide our needs, have we made provisions for specialist, hospice or terminal care, as well as, our expectations?
|
 |
|
Armed with a well-formulated questionnaire, that
includes many probing personal questions, Rocio
is conducting taped interviews of senior Brit
residents, of Torrevieja and the surrounding
area including San Miguel de Salinas, about
their healthcare experiences and reasons for
coming to live on The Costa Blanca. She has
asked carefully selected candidates to provide
photographs to illustrate how they occupy their
days as an insight into life styles.
The study
also includes interviews with healthcare
professionals at local Saluds and Hospitals as well as charity organisations, such as Help Vega Baja and Aged Concern, plus insurance companies. Rocio tells us that the results of the study will be published on The University of Brunel website. |

Axe Falls On Free Health Cover, an important article on Healthcare on the Costa Blanca written by Jack Troughton for the Friday, 06 June 2008 Issue of ROUND TOWN NEWS.
Thousands of expats resident in Valencia will lose access to the state national health system in regional government cutbacks. An announcement detailing changes in the social security laws from the community’s health minister Manuel Cervera was made yesterday afternoon. And the most affected are British residents who do not make contributions to the health system in Spain – often people who have taken early retirement. It is understood the changes will NOT affect pensioners – men aged 65 and women aged 60 – who are covered by an E121, or people migrating to Spain and covered by an E106, who have been working in the UK and have two year’s ‘grace’. However, there could be changes to the EHIC system, the European Union system of guaranteeing health cover for tourists...

| Updated information from
The Health Centre – Salud – San Miguel de
Salinas. The indispensable Jeanette Lopez talks
exclusively to The New Angel Magazine for the
March 2008 Edition: With four doctors, each
with a dedicated nurse, a fully operating
computer system giving us access to Departments
at Torrevieja Hospital and the ability and
equipment to provide a 24/7 emergency service –
The Salud in SMdS is one of the best in this
area, particularly for the foreign community
with no requirement for patients to provide
interpreters. |
 |
But, in order to improve efficiency, administrative changes have had to be made, particularly when it comes to individual entitlement to our services and I want to make sure all residents are aware of these recent changes.
To obtain healthcare you need a SIP Card - Una Tarjeta Sanitaria. To get one, or renew one, applicants need certain documents.
The New Certificate of Residencia – this form, now required for all Salud registrations, has created confusion and much misreporting. It replaces the photo ID NIE Residencia and is easily obtained at The National Police Station in Orihuela. Applicants Require: a valid passport, N.I.E. Number, and new Padron (+ copies of all); it is issued on the spot. Those with expiring old style Residencia Cards will need to apply for one with the same documents.
Form E.121 – (Also applies to those on Disability Allowances) To obtain full entitlement to healthcare applicants must attend the National Insurance Social Security Office, also in Orihuela. Applicants Require: Certificate of Residencia, N.I.E No., new Padron from The Town Hall and the Form E121 (IMPORTANT NOTE: The Form E121 will be surrendered/exchanged for the new SIP Card – take a copy before applying)
Pensioners Rights – in addition, those of pensionable age in UK can receive the same rights in Spain even if they are not permanent residents. Applicants Require: Form E.121, a Pensioners Rights Certificate from The British Consul in Alicante and a new Padron from the Town Hall.
The European Community Health Card (old Form E.111) – generally applies to applicants under retirement age. A SIP Card can be issued – Required: EU Health card (E.111), the standard letter obtainable from Newcastle Social Security UK stating that the applicant is no longer entitled to UK Healthcare, a new padron from SMdS Town Hall.
Holiday Visitors MUST be in possession of this card to receive emergency treatment – those without will not receive treatment but will be directed to attend Torrevieja Hospital.
In Spain every application is individual, that means every member of a family must have individual documentation for their application.

To help the SMdS Salud maintain its high levels of service can I please ask patients not to try to cut corners when it comes to documentation; the requirements are straightforward and easy to fulfil.
|
 |
It was very necessary for the system to be tightened
up to ensure funding and, as a result, our services have
improved dramatically. Finally, I can tell readers that
all the members of staff at SMdS Salud are dedicated to
providing the best healthcare service. |

| San Miguel’s TONE ZONE has been successfully providing individual exercise and weight management programmes for 3 years. These incorporate PILATES and utilize six Toning Tables under qualified nursing supervision. This is a proven system for inch loss. With THE TONE ZONE’s growth, new therapies have been added and it is now a “ONE STOP SHOP” offering a variety of great new treatments. |
During June 2008 The Tone Zone’s Team of fully trained therapists, Bev, Julia, June, Marie & Kim have special offers for a range of treatments. FOR DETAILS call in or
call 966 723 748 - 630 760 767 |
New Angel reader Celia Mack tells us about The Tone Zone – Although I’ve lived in San Miguel for 6 years and passed
The Tone Zone almost daily it never occurred to me what toning table exercise entailed and what other treatments were on offer, so I thought I’d give it a go.
I was warmly welcomed by Kim Chenery who gave me an information pack and we discussed which treatments I would like to try. Kim explained that the toning tables are designed to provide a balanced Pilates based exercise regime to achieve a gentle full body workout.
So, I started on the toning tables moving between all six, each one gently exercising different muscles and finishing with a cool down. Kim told me that my introductory ‘gentle workout’ could develop over time to exercises that provide a full cardio vascular workout where I could work as much or as little in helping me to tone up and even lose inches. I am certain that the tables found a few under-exercised muscles.
My next treatment that day was a Swedish back, shoulder and neck massage by
Marie, the qualified masseuse. Marie made this a wonderfully relaxing experience paying particular attention to my knotted shoulder muscles. I was advised not to have more than one massage in 48 hours and I returned 3 days later to see
June for an Indian Head Massage. When I entered the tranquil, candlelit room I immediately felt relaxed and after completing the questionnaire, June applied oils and started her work.
|
I found it brilliant in clearing my
sinuses and June explained that it was good for
treating a variety of complaints including stiff
neck and insomnia. After resting with a cup of
coffee, Julia was ready to start my next
treatment - an Ionic Foot Detox therapy.
Unfortunately, due to a back operation I had
some 30 years ago, I have metal components that
prevented me having this treatment because it
uses electrical impulses; So, I decided to send
my normally sceptical husband to try this Detox
system. |

Theraptists Julia & June |
I was very surprised when he returned
walking on air and spouting all the scientific facts and
clear benefits of this simple treatment to stimulate the
body in self-detoxification that he had discussed with
therapist Julia; he is now less sceptical and is on a
self imposed ‘more water - less coffee’ regime and has
another appointment.
 |
Therapist Bev is on hand to
provide manicures and pedicures. I opted for a pedicure
with a relaxing foot soak and Bev managed to remove that
age-old problem of hard skin, tidying up
nails and cuticles ready for a glossy red summer look.
Kim also does waxing, I am going back to have my eyebrows done. |
I must say I felt in very safe hands at The Tone Zone and I will be going back for more. |

| The Old Style E111 is no longer valid within the Province of
Valencia and therefore if you are a visitor you will
require the NEW EUROPEAN STANDARD E111 to obtain
medical attention at The Health Centre in San Miguel
de Salinas. You will also need this for EMERGENCY
TREATMENT at the Vega Baja Hospital at Orihuela.
Residents of San Miguel de Salinas, or indeed anywhere in Spain,
should obtain a Spanish E111 or TARJETA SANITARIA
EUROPEA (pictured) if they plan to other Countries
within The EU, including visits home to UK.
This is easily obtained...here's how! With your
Residencia Card and SIP Card go to The Orihuela
office of The Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad
Social and ask for a Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea.
Provided the documents you produced are in order you
will be issued with a Credit Card sized form there
and then. The card is valid for THREE MONTHS.
Although there is a queue it can be obtained usually
in under ONE HOUR. |

This is your rough guide to the medical treatment you
can expect either when moving to or visiting San Miguel de Salinas.
Our Health Centre or Centro de Salud
is a facility provided by the Regional Health Service - Generalitat Valenciana and
we are extremely lucky in the level of health care provided. We have a minimum of
one doctor and a nurse providing 24/7 emergency cover.
Health Centre Staff -
Update 17th May 2005
Following representations, due to the population growth, there are now permanent posts for 3 doctors at the
Medical Centre. The regular doctors are either on maternity leave or sabbatical,
but the health centre is fully staffed with locum doctors. The patient register
has now been divided amongst the 3 posts and patients are asked to check the
lists at reception to ascertain which list number has been allocated.
The current midwife/matrona Da.Doña Solange is shared with the practices at Guardamar and Pilar de la Horadada
but there will be a permanent full time position in the near future. Dealing
with all SIP Tarjeta Sanitaria enquiries is Da. Carmen Mateo Guillén. The
receptionist is Vicenta Medina Ferrer.
The invaluable interpreter Jeanette Lopez is provided at the expense of the Town Hall to assist foreign
patients. Please be mindful that she may not always be available, and whilst the
current doctors speak a little English if you have any complicated matter to
discuss with a doctor it is recommended that you take an interpreter. Please do
not assume that the people you need help from can speak your language!
New Patients - (those entitled to register at this health centre) - there is now an information
sheet in English that can be obtained from reception, which you should read
before registering. This will answer many of your questions concerning the
health care system and save valuable staff time.
Health Centre Hours are from 0800hrs to 1500hrs, with appointments from 0830hrs - 1330hrs.
Should you require an appointment (Cita) for the same day you must call before 1000hrs.
Between 1500hrs - 0800hrs the following morning, there are Medical Staff available for Emergencies ONLY,
and you must ring the bell. House calls are available at the discretion of the patients Doctor ONLY,
and are provided ONLY for those with a registered SIP card for this Health Centre.
Telephone numbers -
for Emergencies Call - 112
for The Health Centre call - 965 720 000
for an Ambulance call - 966 776 728
for Cruz Roja/The Red Cross call - 965 711 818
Emergencies - Whilst the form E111, which we would reminded you is a Form for Medical Emergencies whilst Abroad, is still in use by visitors although it is being phased out in favour of a new European Medical Card entitling the traveller to treatment. The Health centre will provide emergency treatment for visitors to San Miguel de Salinas but it is important to understand that the first choice for emergencies for our area is the Casualty Department Vega Baja Hospital and it's likely that they may direct the patient there. As an extra service during the holiday season there is a mobile Paramedic who may be dispatched as well as an ambulance, according to the medical emergency.
Important information - THREE THINGS YOU MUST DO when coming to live in San Miguel de Salinas or indeed anywhere in Spain.
- It is imperative to bring with you details of your medical history, particularly if it includes chronic conditions such as Heart and Respiratory Problems, Diabetes or Cancer. Besides there being a language problem it is crucial that our Doctors understand your current medical condition and they can only provide correct treatment if they have a written report from your previous doctor.
- If you are on any medication, before visiting our doctors, take the packaging from your UK prescribed drugs to our pharmacy, which is next door to The Health Centre, and get it translated into the Spanish equivalent drug and dosage.
- If it's the only few foreign words you ever learn, make sure you can say your Name, your telephone number and address in Spanish, because you must not assume everybody speaks English. Get someone to write it as it sounds and learn it!
Here's a start - My name is…= Me llamo…or Mi nombre es…; my telephone number is…= mi número de teléfono es....: my address is...= mi dirección es... that's half done for you!
Registering with a Doctor - Here are details and important information that you will need to register at our Health Centre.
For New Residents - There are only three categories: which are you?
Pensionable Age - The following procedure applies if
- You come to live here as a pensioner bringing with you a form E121 from the UK.
- You attain pensionable age whilst living here and request a form E121 from Newcastle, for you and your younger spouse, whom you may include providing both names are listed on the Form.
Take E121 with an up to date copy of the Padrón from The Town Hall, to the INSS office at Calle San Augustin in Orihuela, which is easy to find, and apply for your social security card. Our Health Centre will require your social security number from that card to enter you onto their computer and register you with a doctor for any ongoing treatment you may require. It is not difficult but if you aren't confident of 'going alone' take an interpreter. It is important!
Non-pensionable Age - Under Spanish Residency laws it is a requirement that you have private medical insurance if you intend to live here permanently. You may however register with our Health Centre for initial and emergency treatment and to do so you will require the following documents:
- Form E111 or Form E106.
- An up to date Padrón / Town Hall Registration from the Town Hall
- Application form SIP, also from the Town Hall (it's even in English!)
- Either a photocopy of your Social Security Card
- Or photocopy of your N.I.E number
- Or photocopy of your Residencia card or copy of application for Residencia
Children under 15 years - Under Spanish law all children have a right to medical care but will require the following documents in order to register at the health centre.
- Form E111
- An up to date Padrón from the Town Hall
In this case our Health Centre will issue a SIP card, which is required for any school trips.
