The Details
This good sized two bedroom, 2nd floor, newly completed apartment in a good location close to the village centre. The apartment is new in 2008 and fully furnished and decorated to high standards. A little about the Cave Area of San Miguel de Salinas - there are an estimated 30,000 cave dwellings in Spain; in this region only SMdS and neighbouring Rojales have caves. In SMdS they were carved out of the rock by migrant 'Esparto Grass' harvesters; the grass is used to weave baskets, shoes - almost anything... In Rojales it was coal miners from Murcia that developed their cave area.
Visitors may explore the Barrio de las Cuevas... you'll be walking over the roofs of the homes, some still occupied. You can visit two - Las Cuevas Restaurante and Cueva Numero Cuatro, the art gallery of local artist Maire Kalkowski There is also a little feature on the History Page about Las Cuevas de las Gachas. San Miguel de Salinas has a programme of regeneration in this area with newly paved pedestrianized areas and new planting. A number of plans are in the pipeline for opening more caves.
