Artist Maire Kalkowski at La Cueva Numero Cuatro – Cavehouse No.4, San Miguel’s first Art Gallery. |
 |
When Guntram Prochaska grasps his chain saw, works of art emerge. He has a special relationship with trees, "wood lives and changes. His skill with the chain saw frightens the wood to sacrifice its inner beauty".
The 1958 action artist, born in the Karlsruhe quarter Grötzingen, creates sculptures, often a meter high, and his work has been seen and admired in 40 Countries worldwide.
El Establo - The Stable – at Eagles Nest has a summer
exhibition of art and visitors can also enjoy music, food and drink on the terrace.
El Establo is open from Tuesday to Saturday with weekend entertainment.

The exposición
de dibujo y pintura - Exhibition of Art during May
2008 at The Casa Cultura of SMdS featured the
work of no less than 66 artists, students of
Ricardo Hanna & Gabriela Navarré.
We congratulate organisers for exhibiting such
great varied works of talented local artists. It
was a pleasure to enjoy such varied work - our
particular favourite was the above - An Arab
with his horse - a very striking study.

Greeted by friends Iris Luke and Doreen
Atkinson, how glad we are to feature such a
successful exhibition. Iris has been painting
for 4 years and Doreen for 2 years and they were
so pleased to be involved in the exhibition.
Both Geordies, they epitomize the philosophy of
doing something to occupy their leisure time
after coming to live in Spain,
something they both said they had not done since
they were at school, a few years ago now ha ha!, and something that gave them
much pleasure and relaxation.
Iris (left) was understandably proud of her portrait of sister Deborah, a wedding gift, and Doreen (right) is learning new skills as she
paints a variety of subjects.
A further exhibition from the same school of
artists is promised for the future. |

| Artist Maire Kalkowski at La Cueva Numero Cuatro – Cavehouse No.4, San Miguel’s first Art Gallery.
Set in The Cave Area of San Miguel de Salinas, Barrio de 1°, just off Calle Gorgora, lays a very exciting new attraction for the pueblo. Local Artist Maire Kalkowski has transformed Cavehouse No.4 into an exhibition of her paintings and sculpture.
|
| With a gathering of local artisans, including her accomplished art teacher,
Juan José GILGLEZ, a small inaugural gathering was held on 20th April where her varied works were on display.
Much reformation has been required to turn Cave No.4 into a safe place. As with many caves in The San Miguel Barrio it had been empty and neglected for at least five years and after much hard work by the Artist and her friends, including a new floor and other necessary works, all has been completed and it is now open to the public.
|
 |
Maire Kalkowski is a very versatile, prolific and
talented artist and has paintings in acrylic and
watercolour - abstract, still life and local scenes
and landscapes as well as collage and sculpture.
Maire told me that her home, not too far from Cave
No.4, was at bursting point and somewhere had to be
found where she could display her work. Her idea,
besides encouraging a growing art scene, is to
provide somewhere those other local artists and
friends can display their work.
It has no licence to sell artwork currently but
this may change in the future. Entry is free and
hours of opening, roughly 4pm - 6pm. The Cave Area
of San Miguel de Salinas has so much potential for
renovation and this is such a great example of how
the area could be regenerated to create true visitor
attractions for the pueblo. Whether you are a fan of
art or not we strongly recommend that you pop down
to La Cueva Numero Cuatro and see Maire’s artwork
and check out this fascinating attraction. |

The charming Maire speaks German, Spanish and English!
Talking to Maire might even inspire you to try some
form of art as a leisure activity… I often used to
say ‘Art, I could do that!’ and now I do when time
permits… I will have to do one of my glass and
ceramic mosaics to display at La Cueva Numero Cuatro. |
|
Maire is also having an
exhibition a the Museum in San Javier from 14th May to 3rd
June. The inauguration will be on Wednesday 14th at 8.30pm
and those interested in a trip would be very welcome. |

An interesting exhibition of paintings
entitled 'PAISAJES de San Miguel de Salinas' by
local Teacher and Artist Juan José GILGLEZ is open at The Casa Cultura between 28th April & 13 May at The Casa Cultura. |
|
J.J.Gilglez has been teaching at The Municipal School of Painting and Sculpture here in SMdS for 4 years and displays his paintings of scenes of the pueblo. Working in Acrylic and Oil,
the scenes are all familiar subjects and feature the
Cave Area and local landscapes. |

A charming man, Juan José GILGLEZ, was
born in Cehegín, Murcia
in 1952 and studied art at The University of Murcia.
He has drawn comic strip cartoons, designed poster
campaigns, and taught architectural design, theology
and arts psychology, and written 'a matter of
balance' on the subject of sculpture.
The exhibition, open from 11am - 1pm
& 6pm - 9pm is well worth a visit. We
interrupted him at work on a portrait but Juan José was delighted
to stop to explain and discuss his work. We regret
that our photographs do not do the work justice. |

| Our previous Cultural Festival -
Folk - in August 2005 featured
DJOKOTO &
PAPA BORREGA
with Guests CREMA DE GALLEGA, bringing the diverse African Dance
and percussion group from Barcelona and 'la Gaita' from Galicia or the
Spanish Bagpipe.
Djokoto is an African dance and percussion group from Barcelona. The
name ‘Djokoto’ derives from an African dialect meaning ‘Heat of the
Germans’ and the troupe is made up of professional dance artists from
different countries, including the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Togo and
Ghana. Their spectacular show features traditional African Dance and
Music in colourful costumes bringing their audiences an insight into
this true and original African art form.
Papa Borrega and Crema de Gallega
brought us the Bagpipes. Bagpipes or gaita were broadly played in Galicia in the middle
ages. There are reproductions of bagpipers in Romanic churches and
Monasteries built in the XI century and pictures of bagpipers in the
Court of the King Alfonso X El Sabio, dating back to the XIII century.
Galician bagpipes come in lots of flavors and there used to be bellows blown gaitas
galegas or 'gaita de barquén', but they are scarce now. The most
popular the gaita galega or the Galician bagpipes is mouth-blown and it
is similar in physical appearance to Great Highland Bagpipes. A minor
difference is the shape of the bag. A major difference is the number and
position of the drones. The gaita galega has from one to three drones.
The bass drone always leans on the left bagpiper's shoulder (for a
right-handed bagpiper, of course), and its position can range from being
almost vertical to being horizontal (parallel to the floor, pointing
backwards), depending on the shape of the bag and the player's
preferences. This drone is tuned as the bass drone for a Great Highland
Bagpipes, two octaves below the base note of the chanter. |
