A special wedding on Saturday 8th October 2007 at The Parchiac Parish Church of San Miguel de Salinas for Teresa Wilden & Geoff Reeder, owners of Pimientos Restaurant here in the pueblo.

It was an ideal setting for the talented ladies of the Velvetones Barbershop Chorus who provided the musical accompaniment to the traditional Catholic Wedding Ceremony with haunting harmonies to hymns such as 'Bind us together', 'The whole world in his hand' and Jerusalem. This was The Velvetones first contribution to a wedding ceremony and they were pleased to practice Teresa and Geoff's favourite hymns especially for the event.

Wedding guests went to an equally special reception at the newlyweds Restaurant - Pimientos. Many remarked that it would not be long before The Velvetones were asked to make another wedding very special.

We too, add our congratulations to Teresa and Geoff

Set in Plaza de la Libertad is our beautiful Church built in 1723 and dedicated to St Michael the Archangel, from whence we derive the name of our humble pueblo, San Miguel de Salinas - St Michael of the Salt lakes.

Our Saint's Day, which we share with all the Catholic Church, is on 29th September each year, a date shared by the three Archangels, the other two being The Archangel Gabriel, whose name in Hebrew means "Strength of God"; it was he who announced to Mary that she was to become the mother of Our Lord: and The Archangel Raphael, whose name means medic or ointment of God.

Meet Father Lucas, The Parish Priest of the Parroquia de San Miguel de Salinas. We invited him to tell us a little about himself and we were so pleased when he took up the challenge, which he did as his English language homework.

Father Lucas is a native of Crevillente and was born on 24 Oct 1972. His parents were very religious and always spoke about having a priest in the family. He first thought of becoming a priest at the age of eight and studied in the Seminaries of Orihuela and Alicante for fourteen years before his ordination in 1998.

The Bishop of Orihuela sent Father Lucas to his first parish of El Sagrado Corazon de Jesús (The Sacred Heart of Jesus) in Elche and in October 2004 he was sent to San Miguel de Salinas to become the Parochial Priest.

Father Lucas says he wants to bring the good news of Jesus to the people of the pueblo. On the question of the way the community could or should integrate he believes that it very important for everyone to open their hearts and minds to accept everyone else. The way to find happiness, he says, can be found in the teaching of Jesus Christ.

We have met Father Lucas on a number of occasions and he is a delightful gentleman. He is young, energetic and very approachable. We have told him that this page is totally at his disposal for any notices that he wishes to make.

This ceramic plaque has been especially commissioned by The Parochial Church of San Miguel de Salinas. It makes an ideal and unique gift from San Miguel de Salinas and the money raised will be used in church restorations. It can be purchased (10€) at the Church - on days when a service is held and half an hour or so before the service. Father Lucas told us that besides the money for restoration it is also a nice display item that is designed to promote our Patron - San Miguel Archangel.

Michael the Archangel, whose name in Hebrew means, "Who is like God", is revered as the leader of the angelic army who will conquer Satan and his armies of demons, and is considered the defender of the Church. Michael is more often represented in art than any other angelic being. He is often shown wearing armour, in the act of slaying the great Dragon of the Apocalypse [Satan] in Revelation 12:7-9

This pen and brown ink sketch of Saint Michael, c. 1530 by Giulio Romano 1499 - 1546 is displayed in the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.

Below is pictured the Private Chapel - Hermitage
in the grounds of Casa de Lo Balaguer within the municipality.

A Prayer to Saint Michael Saint Michael, Archangel,

defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
