Urbanization Information - Ciudad de las Comunicaciones is seen by its residents as being a prestigious urbanization situated on a raised promontory about 1.5 km outside the Town. It gains its name from the fact that parcels of 500 sq.mt. were awarded to members of the Communication and Postal Workers Union as a reward for their loyalty to the Government. Built around 1985 the urbanization is fairly unique in that all properties are detached and stand on this minimum sized plot. It was built in four phases, the last being the group of villas known as Torrestrella, Villas Maria and Lopez Homes. There remain a number of plots and areas around this estate that are likely to be developed in the future. Residents include many Spanish in the older phases, together with Scandinavian, German and Dutch, but the most sizable group now consists of those from the UK. There is a beautiful Chapel in the Urbanization and also a Social Club which has good facilities.

There have been various community groups formed over the years but because there are little or no communal facilities there has been no particular reason to have an active Community of Owners. In February 2004 owners of the aforementioned properties in phase 4, following years of frustration at not being able to get some services - most particularly telephones, formed a legally constituted Community of Neighbours, being a lesser body, and after lengthy dialogues with the Ayuntamiento and Telefonica, telephones were finally installed within the Urbanization. Issues of further development are never far from the minds of residents, especially as there are prime areas that are currently designated as recreational but which developers have in mind for other plans.

The Community of Neighbours, now registered as the Asociación de Vecinos de Villas Maria y Torrestrella, has been successful in engineering its own system of 'Neighbourhood Watch', which has also proved effective and they produce the occasional newsletter to keep residents aware of current issues. Urbanization Ciudad de
las Comunicaciones

We picture the Committee of the newly registered Asociación de Vecinos de Villas Maria y Torrestrella at their AGM on Monday 20th February 2006. The Group has been awaiting the finalisation of the legal registration procedure for some months and is now able to present the official document to The Town Hall.

There are, like all the urbanizations in San Miguel de Salinas, issues that can be presented better as a group and the meeting agreed to raise the following matters: firstly the repair of the many damaged rubbish bin location rails; secondly, repair of a number of sites where the road has subsided, particularly around manhole covers; and lastly a request for the Town Hall to cut back or dig out a number of weedy areas that are now invading the road.

Amongst other issues raised, residents wanted to know what proposals and solutions existed for the Sewage Plant, attention to at least 10 unlit street lights and dog fouling...which, as always, is down to just a few irresponsible owners. The question of installing 'sleeping policemen' or traffic calming measures was raised for Calle Leon but the group overwhelmingly voted against the proposal.

A hand full of residents have worked very hard to create a 'garden' at the entrance to the urbanization and residents agreed to set aside an amount of 200€, from funds, for improving and maintaining this garden area.
