ICE - IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

The idea of entering an ‘ICE’ (In Case of Emergency) number in one’s mobile telephone has been adopted by the SAMUR ambulances in Spain and is gradually expanding worldwide. The ambulance services have taken into account that the majority of their patients carry a mobile telephone with them and that the use of an ‘ICE’ number can assist with the rapid identification of an accident victim and ensure that next of kin are informed.

Everyone is asked to join in this simple scheme. The international pseudonym, ‘ICE’ (In Case of Emergency) will be recognised by the emergency services wherever you are.

Mobile phone users are asked to enter the word ‘ICE’ in their telephone directory along with the number of the person to contact ‘in case of emergency’. In this way, emergency services can search the mobile phone directory of a victim unable to speak for himself. When there are various options, the code ICE1, ICE2,ICE3, etc. should be used.

According to SAMUR, “It’s simple, it doesn’t cost anything and it can help us a lot!”
