We feature our local Round Town News reporter Louise Clarke’s article on the New Cultural Association to Promote Integration - La Rebolica Cultural Association was launched last month and in collaboration with the San Miguel de Salinas Town Hall, hopes to make the integration of all San Miguel residents a real possibility.
The Association’s aim is to promote the different cultures of the pueblo and in conjunction with the Town Hall’s Department of Culture and promote culture for all residents, regardless of nationality. By using the town’s library as a base, their first priority is to promote integration by utilising the books of different languages that are already available in the library. Carola, who is on the Association’s committee told Louise: “Curiosity comes with reading. From history and geography to languages, books open the door to knowledge.”
The Association will also use social activities to promote integration and plans to introduce book and drawing clubs to bring the children of the town together on a social basis as opposed to just at school. Carola commented: “Children will learn about each other’s different cultures through the various activities that we have planned and we hope that they will learn more through speaking to and playing with each other. |
Plans for adult activities will include Salsa dancing classes, regular get-togethers and day trips to aid the integration between the various nationalities that live in San Miguel. Carola added: “Children integrate well at school with their fellow classmates but this doesn’t happen as much with the parents. We will use the library as the hub, the nucleus, of intercultural activities to promote and improve the cultural life and intercultural activities of the town’s residents.”
She concluded: “The Association is dedicated to preserving, resurrecting and promoting local culture. It is a little sad that San Miguel de Salinas has lost this interaction between its residents. We accept the different groups and nationalities of the town with open arms. We want to embrace them and as a result, we will become one town without segregation. It matters not where they originate from. We are all residents of San Miguel and we should support each other and live together. Let’s integrate! It’s easy to do and it’s important to get involved and participate.”
The Association is also, alongside the San Miguel de Salinas Town Hall, organising a Christmas Fair on 19th December. The event will be held in the town’s church square and will be a day of cultural exchange and a display of traditional Christmas customs such as gastronomy, local crafts and Christmas decorations.
The Town Hall invites people to participate in this fair and contribute with their own ideas, traditions and proposals. If you have a business this would be a good opportunity to display and sell your Christmas products, if this is not the case, you can still show the Spanish people the ways that you celebrate it in your native country with typical food and drink as well as what traditions you have and how you decorate your house for Christmas. Everybody can participate. |
