MAPS Vega Baja Carretera (Map VB)

11.2.07. - Town Hall press release on supporting those affected by the Autovía

13th February 2007 - This map relates to the Vega Baja Carretera - the new Autovía from Orihuela to The Coast. There have been at least three proposed routes that effect the Municipality of San Miguel de Salinas. The plan dissects an area currently designated as agricultural land. Properties will be effected by the route and the Mayor has pledged to support those affected by any imposition made by government.

The demonstration of some 250 neighbours from the pueblo on Sunday 18th February 2007 protested about the necessity for this road - an Autovía - this is a 6 lane highway following the route of the CV 95 from Orihuela to The Coast. See MAP below
Mark Tissington of The Coastrider reports 'Change isn't always progress'

Local residents from Bigastro, Jacarilla, Vistabella, Orihuela and even bussed in from San Miguel de Salinas all joined forces to oppose the national government's proposed new road from Orihuela to the coast. The exact route has yet to be decided but one will see the municipality of SMdS split in half and a six lane Autovia ploughed straight through orange groves and arable land, all contributing to the area's natural beauty, so that there is a slightly faster route from the A-7 in Orihuela that will link up the AP-7 and joining the coastal road in Los Balcones.

Across the political spectrum councillors from all parties in the San Miguel Town Hall joined demonstrators on Sunday morning the show their disgust at the new road. Mayor of San Miguel, Angel Sáez, issued a statement saying that he supported the residents of San Miguel and opposed any changes to the detriment of the town.
Protestors gathered at Vistabella on the CV-95 that leads from San Miguel to Bigastro and on to Orihuela, near the junction of the CV-945 leading to Entre Naranjos and Los Montesinos. Guardia Civil officers had to re-route traffic as the protestors, all local residents, blocked the road and chanted anti-road slogans. One of the demonstrators, Karl, said, "This is impressive. It shows that Expats and Spanish alike are against a plan that will ruin the countryside when there are perfectly adequate, existing routes already available to motorists." Pepe, one of the Spanish organisers of the demonstration said, "It is stupid! One half of the government are buying up coastal land to protect it whilst the other half are building roads all over it. We don't want nor need a new road especially not a six lane motorway." The demonstrators then marched towards San Miguel, banners held aloft flanked by orange trees stretching off into the distance.
