On 26th May 2007 following a concert of pasedobles Maestro D. José Navarro Roser of The Musical Union of San Miguel de Salinas honoured D. Manuel LORCA for 54 years of tireless work for the orchestra – And Manolo, he said, was not even an accomplished musician. Retiring this week, it was said of him that it has so often been Manolo who has made many speeches to thank others, that his work has touched so many people’s lives and that he has always been there in some capacity – secretary, treasurer and any other task asked of him. Always the first to rise, there was never an occasion during those years when the company arrived at the conservatoire on Día de Santa Cecilia to find the tables bare – he always put tortas and the beverage fresquita out for the celebration.

He has swept the floors, patched the seats of the auditorium and been a father to every member of the band; he has followed the band for every performance and the Musical Union of San Miguel de Salinas would have been the poorer without his faithful services.

D. Manuel LORCA and his wife were honoured with the congratulations of the Band and a presentation on his retirement.

ALPENGOLD SHOWBAND
Music knows no bounds... This is the philosophy of Alpengold with some 30-35 musicians who meet weekly to rehearse a wide variety of music in order to provide programmes for concerts, fetes, and fund raising for charities. Their repertoire, which varies widely, includes marches, light classics, Broadway and West End productions, and Christmas carols.

The members come from a wide variety of backgrounds from countries within the EU. Their standard of musicianship ranges from ex school band players through to military and ex professional.
Basil Starbuck - the Musical Director, endeavours to attain a high standard of playing with his rehearsal and band training, which he acquired during his service in the British Army Music Corps. In addition Basil also attended the renowned Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall where he studied trumpet and cornet as well as harmony, instrumentation and conducting.

The Band welcomes players with some experience, preferably with a minimum playing standard of Grade 5. Apart from the month of August, Alpengold Showband rehearses every Tuesday at 1 pm at La Marquesa Band Room, near Torrevieja.

For enquiries about playing with the band or for booking the band, please contact Basil Starbuck on 966 775 075, or Di Hedley on 965 716 601.

JUST BRASS
This Band was originally formed some four years ago as a quartet of brass players from The Vega Baja Big Band and Alpengold Showband. They particularly enjoyed playing traditional brass band style quartet music. The quartet has progressed under the Directorship of Gordon Higginbottom and the band now has nine permanent musicians playing a variety of music specially composed or orchestrated and arranged by Gordon.
The BBC describe Gordon Higginbottom as "almost legendary" as his performances as soloist, tutor, adjudicator and lecturer are acclaimed. They include contributions in a vast number of countries as diverse as Mexico, Japan, Australia and, of course, Europe.

Gordon has been professor at the Leeds College of Music and the London College of Music, and is currently an Associate Tutor at Salford University and an examiner at the Royal Northern College of Music. He retired as Promotions Manager with Yamaha-Kemble Music (UK) Limited before moving to live in Spain.
One of Gordon's last professional gigs was as an invited musician for the soundtrack of the film "Evita", and since coming to Spain as an invited soloist in Mexico. Gordon has enjoyed a varied career having performed with most of the UK's top brass bands, including The London Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also been a regular broadcaster with The BBC, playing with The BBC Band and as a session musician.

The aim of Just Brass is to play music that entertains the citizens of The Towns of the Vega Baja. For enquiries for booking the band please contact John Bawden on 966 706 959, or Tony Murray on 966 789 965.

For a small town San Miguel de Salinas makes a significant contribution to music.  Musical talent has been nurtured because it is very important in Spanish culture, perhaps more so than in the countries of the UK. Musical excellence is not achieved easily. It relies on endless study and practise and dedication to a group to create harmony, balance and imaginative interpretation.

Our prestigious conservatoire - La Unión Musical de San Miguel de Salinas has been influential in nurturing that musical excellence for many generations and our photo shows The Band in the year of its constitution in 1927.

Music is a very important vein that runs through the youth in the community and this article features all the Bands of San Miguel de Salinas, which include some of the 'offshoot' smaller groups who favour punk, jazz or even folk music. Musicians can be heard practising around the pueblo, not just at the conservatoire but also in the odd garage for a mad jamming session.

'La Unión Musical de San Miguel de Salinas'

The first musical seed was sown in San Miguel of Salinas around 1880 when a group of enthusiastic people joined together to learn music under the direction of the Maestro, a man called Vallejos. But it would take many years before their endeavors would come to fruition.

Finally in 1927 La Unión Musical de San Miguel de Salinas was constituted with the support of cultural funding and under the baton of Maestro, D. Aureliano Baches, a man of great musical and organizational ability.

As with all great enterprises many changes of circumstances and fortune occurred over the years and The Musical Union went into decline only to rise again in 1977, when some of the older musicians of the town wanted to revive their musical culture. This vision was inspired by the Maestro D. Antonio Vicente. He directed the revival for seven years before yielding his baton to our current Musical Director, the Maestro D. José Navarro Roser.

This is not just a town band; it is a talented orchestra with staggering music ability. Amongst their achievements they can list a 1st prize at International Level in Valencia, seven 1st prizes in Provincial, Regional and National Level at competitions in Leganés, Cheste, Segorbe, Cocentaina, Alicante, Pego and most recently in the City of Murcia for the XIV Certamen Nacional de Bandas de Música "Ciudad de Murcia" 2004. They can also add three 2nd prizes in contests of provincial and national level and a 3rd prize at national level.

This level of achievement can only be reached with the enthusiasm of every member of the Musical Union and it is an inspirational example to the youth of San Miguel de Salinas to perpetuate our musical heritage and culture.

The Directors of The Musical Union recognized that they should think of the future, notwithstanding that their students were now studying at the conservatories of Murcia, Alicante and Paris. As the Municipal School of Music the idea was conceived in 1996 to form a Youth Band for the younger members.

Another of the great achievements of The Musical Union was to create an Annual Summer Music School, bringing together more than 120 students from around Spain and professors of great national and international prestige. The interchange of talent and ideas has established an event that produces more musical excellence.

There is much pride that our Musical Union of San Miguel de Salinas has been the nursery of many professional musicians that have gone on to make great contributions of the highest level to many National and International Orchestras. And this is a measure of our small town band – La Unión Musical de San Miguel de Salinas.

Estilos: Heavy Metal
Influencias: Debido a los gustos tan variados entre los componentes las influencias pueden ir desde 'Skid Row' hasta 'Deep Purple', desde muro hasta marea...pasando por diferentes grupos de heavy, y rock

Biografía: Serion was conceived in October 2000.  It was formed by four individuals who met in a local cafeteria – Pepe’s - to eat. They called themselves Sentence and their initial style was somewhat different to the Band’s sound of today. It was a sort of mixture between Punk and Hard Rock and since then the sound has evolved to one of sheer Heavy Metal.

Componentes:

Ruben ALEDO - Guitarra
Victor Ramon PATIÑO - Voz
Victor Manuel PINA - Bateria
Jose Ramon GOMEZ - Bajo
Jorge GAONA - Teclados

The first members of the band were Aledo and Java on the guitar, Pepe on bass and Manuel on the drums.  Although initially they did not have vocal content later in the same year they recruited new members Elías and Víctor, who sang with the band.  Shortly after, Elías left the band leaving Víctor to provide the voice of Sentence.

Sentence began to perform at various concerts in the Towns around The Vega Baja, and with every appearance they gained confidence and transformed their style of music into what audiences enjoy so much today. The band members stayed the same and the evolved style of music heralded a new phase in the band’s development…and a new name Serion.

It was then when they decided to cut their first record - ‘The End of the Bospue' – in 2002 that subsequently gave name to a theme.  This was recorded at the studios of the ‘Seor Guindilla Recorda’, and produced by Javier Desiderio and Jes of Voice of the Cradle.

Serion has continued to perform concerts all over the Province of Alicante, joining up with groups such as Porretas, Boikot, Ponchok, Arrasando Zepas, Copue Malla, etc.  They have also participated in various contests for music of this genre.

It was in September of 2004 when Serion would record its first album entitled ‘Breaking the Silence'.  This first LP is composed of ten pieces - ten themes, and was cut in the studios of Lorca Productions, with Manuel Torrogosa directing the production.

At present they have a number of concerts planned with big artists of the size of ‘Lust’ or ‘Medina Azahara’, with whom they played during the San Miguel de Salinas Fiesta 2005. And they rocked the Church Square on 30 June 2006

Biografía: Three mates decided to form a small group so they got together some instruments and had a go. But it was a bit limited without drums and instruments to make the sound they wanted. So they asked around and others got involved. After a lot of sessions, with some musicians coming and some going, they finally hit the notes they were after and the survivers called themselves Katástrofe. This is just one of the true bands of San Miguel de Salinas.

Contacto: pepe luis 660889734 tono 659100414

Estilos: punk-oi! kon algunos tokes de ska
Influencias: contra la pared, envidia kotxina, puag, kaos urbano...

Biografía: Bored at School one morning Sergio decided to form a Group, little knowing that his mates Pepe and Jose Carlos had the same idea. Time passed and the summer came..it was time. No gear…except Toreli’s dad had an acoustic guitar. They practised a lot and then Toreli got hold of an electric guitar, which he taught himself how to use in a week. They began by doing versions of numbers by other groups, notably Ska-p y Tierra Santa, but it was time to be original…compose something. But this created a dilemma…what kind of group were they going to be? ¿punk or heavy? The group decided on Punk Rock.
Then came their first single: "Trash Polítika", and later others called "Screwed cretin" and "Pikoleto Kabron". Now was the time for their concert debut, which turned out to be in Christmas week at The Casa Cultura here in San Miguel de Salinas. They played with other groups Stropizio, Matorrales y Lucha sin descanso and it was a great success, especially as they recruited two friends Luis and Efren who gave the added dimension of the trombone and trumpet to the sound. The end result was a Punk Group of seven musicians playing music in the style Ska-oi!. Sin Tregue, literally “no surrender” was born.

Performances: 18th December 2004 at Casa Cultura San Miguel de Salinas, 25th December 2004 carpa municipal with other groups stropizio, Matorrales y Lucha sin descanso, and 23rd March 2005 - IES San Miguel with katastrofe. They also performed during September 2005 for the Fiesta in San Miguel de Salinas. A more complete biography in Spanish can be found on the Unión Musical website in Spanish - Click here

Their spectacular show features traditional African Dance and Music in colourful costumes bringing their audiences an insight into this true and original African art form.

Papa Borrega and Crema de Gallega brought us the Bagpipes. Bagpipes or gaita were broadly played in Galicia in the middle ages. There are reproductions of bagpipers in Romanic churches and Monasteries built in the XI century and pictures of bagpipers in the Court of the King Alfonso X El Sabio, dating back to the XIII century.

Galician bagpipes come in lots of flavors and there used to be bellows blown gaitas galegas or 'gaita de barquén', but they are scarce now. The most popular the gaita galega or the Galician bagpipes is mouth-blown and it is similar in physical appearance to Great Highland Bagpipes. A minor difference is the shape of the bag. A major difference is the number and position of the drones. The gaita galega has from one to three drones. The bass drone always leans on the left bagpiper's shoulder (for a right-handed bagpiper, of course), and its position can range from being almost vertical to being horizontal (parallel to the floor, pointing backwards), depending on the shape of the bag and the player's preferences. This drone is tuned as the bass drone for a Great Highland Bagpipes, two octaves below the base note of the chanter.

Alcores Choir of San Miguel de Salinas

The Alcores Choir of San Miguel de Salinas joined other Choirs and our Musical Union of San Miguel de Salinas in the first Festival of San Milírico on 23rd and 24th April 2005. Great performances!

La Coral Alcores was formed at the beginning of 2004 by a group of local people with a love of the Operetta and of the Habanera. The group met occasionally to sing together and decided to perform small choral recitals as a part of theatrical shows in the pueblo for the benefit of the townsfolk. They continued because of their fondness for the music and the delight of their audiences.

Their dedication and determination to form a proper Choir lead them to seek the support of the Ayuntamiento of San Miguel de Salinas, following representations D. Aurelio Martínez López who was subsequently appointed to assume responsibility and lead the group forward as "La Coral Alcores", the name deriving from the range of hills on which our town stands.

The first public performance of The Alcores Choir was on 15 May 2004 offering an impressive repertoire of habaneras. The great sensibility of their renditions of this style of singing delighted local people who had memories of past times when these songs were sung in the pueblo.

In their second performance on September 26 of the same year they were joined by the Choir Torrevejense Francisco Vallejos for a performance entitled 'A Concert of Habaneras and South American Music'. It was a delight for D. Aurelio Martínez López to direct the two choirs in another spectacular presentation.

On 19th December the choir's third appearance took place in our Church Parish, where they performed a concert of 'Villancicos'. Currently there are 35 members of the choir and everyone who is involved in La Coral Alcores is enthusiastic to improve their skills and perform to wider audiences. The idea of having a local choir could not have come to fruition without the support of the town itself, for many of those involved also have to contend with the commitment of families and small businesses.

And so to their latest triumph - the first Festival of San Milírico; supported by our great Musical Union, a packed Casa Cultura enjoyed a varied repertoire, conducted by the Maestro D. Aurelio Martínez López, concluding with the great piece 'Estampas del 98' by Francisco Grau. There is much more to come from La Coral Alcores de San Miguel de Salinas.

The Habanera is a style of music derived from the Cuban Fishermen, and taken up in many towns of the Costas; as they walked up the beaches on their way home they would sing love shanties to their waiting wives.
