Radio San Miguel supports our friend Eddie Wallace, the Sol Productions
presenter and entertainer, following the burglary at his
home in Catral. Thieves broke in and stole many items but
none so important as Eddie's backing tracks that are
essential for his performances as a singer and
entertainer. He has had to cancel his forthcoming gigs.
More than 300 tracks held on 30 MINI DISCS, each in their own little square case were in a small metallic case,
which will be of no value to the thieves and are very likely to be dumped. If you have any information that helps Eddie recover these items please contact the website or call us on the Radio San Miguel number 662 060 717.

Radio San Miguel
was a project conceived in 1987 by three local lads. With lots of energy, initiative and inspiration they wanted to give San Miguel de Salinas a Free Radio Station. It was so successful in bringing local cultural and social issues to the airwaves that The Town Hall could not ignore its impact on the local community. In 1991 the Mayor D. Manuel Lorente gave the lads his full support and their little 'pirate radio station' legally became The Municipal Radio Station.
The dream had now become a reality and San Miguel of Salinas is still to this day one of the few municipalities of Alicante
that has such a service.
Radio San Miguel grew from strength to strength reaching an ever-increasing audience in the town and
neighbouring areas. It now transmits 24/7,12 hours of which is produced in their studio at The Library in San Miguel de Salinas: it links with Spanish Radio 5 for all the National News updates and other programs. |
|
A few problems arose in 1994 with an attempt to privatize the radio station. This clearly threatened the fundamental principals of initial project - a community radio station. After much political wrangling over whether or not Radio San Miguel complied with the objectives of a public utility or of a municipal radio station, local councilor Vicente Martinez Campillo looked into the legal matters and they were soon resolved and our Radio San Miguel became fully accredited to the Generalitat Valencian. |
| |
Of course listeners are never really interested in these issues, they just want that most important thing - information about their town. Radio San Miguel achieves this admirably and today although controlled and supervised by its own counsel of administration in consultation with our current councilman of culture D. Manuel Mañogil, it is a truly independent and liberal radio station for the citizens of San Miguel de Salinas. It has an estimated 6,000 listeners and but the Concejalia de Cultura has an ongoing project to expand coverage to the town's new urbanizations in the next two years.
Radio San Miguel transmits on 107.4 FM and since 1995 the director and broadcaster is Angel, known to all as 'Lito', and many thanks to him for providing this inspiring article. The regular female voice belongs to 'Rocio' but there are many collaborators, listeners and friends that pop in and lend their voice.
About this Programme in English 'from the heart of the pueblo'... our first was way back on Monday 21st February 2005. This followed an invitation from the Directors of Municipal Radio San Miguel and The Town Hall for this website to be the host of a programme with information for the English speaking residents of San Miguel de Salinas. It's an important opportunity because the views of the English speaking community count and we know our Spanish Hosts are listening.

Radio San Miguel 107.4fm Global “Project Pure-Essence”
Our new project to encourage youth bands in the pueblo. Inspired by
Kevin Matthews, Bass Guitarist for the Manchester Band -
PURESSENCE & Louise Clarke of RTN with Caz 'The Barber from
Quesada' launch the project on Radio San Miguel - 4
June 2007.
Can't make music - form a Band
Need help - We'll help!
You make music - we'll play it!
Why? Because we can! |

| Louise Clarke of
Round Town News with Caz at the Radio launch of the
project |

Kevin Matthews, Bass Guitarist of The Manchester Band PURESSENCE |
| We all know youth issues are important in both the present and future of San Miguel de Salinas and many in the community are looking for ideas to occupy our young people. Our Councillor for Youth, Inma Hernández, is actively seeking ideas from young people as to what activities they want the Town Hall to arrange. However, most of the activities planned revolve around The Old Instituto – as the new Youth Centre. We recognize that many young people will not be attracted to these organized activities, particularly those living in the outlying urbanizations – they may want facilities and options closer to home.
The Radio San Miguel Team have come up with an idea inspired by
Kevin Matthews the Bass Guitarist of the professional Manchester Band – Puressence. Kevin is the brother of our Caz ‘The Barber of Quesada’ and he was a pueblo visitor and guest on our Monday Show on 28th May 2007. We asked him for ideas on how we could get kids focused and he said ‘One way, my way, is with Music’. We all sat down – had a beer and a think – and our new ‘project – Pure-Essence – proyecto’ was born.
The Radio San Miguel Team plans to promote local musical groups, play their music, arrange concerts and competitions, support youngsters that want to start new groups; everybody wants to be a rock star! It has to go further than that – they need places to play music, they may need help learning how to play music and they may even need help getting instruments to play music… Radio San Miguel can help them with all those things. Good ideas attract support.
San Miguel de Salinas has a rich heritage of music with the internationally acclaimed Musical Union and The Centuria Romana Band of Drums and Cornets. Because music is so deeply rooted in Spanish culture there are also many offshoot bands, Punk Bands mainly, that ‘jam’ in the Kasitas of the pueblo, like
Serion, Katástrofe, Sin Tregua, insurrekzion armada & ingobernables. These are ex-establishment, ‘off the wall’ even slightly anarchist ‘grupos de musíca’, but don’t knock it, they are very into their music. The Spanish cherish music, in any form, and we think that is something we should get our heads round. The pure essence of self-expression in music is good for the soul and a constructive pastime that should be encouraged – don’t you think?
Our view is that those in need of the greatest support, those in the outlying urbanizations, are some of the most disaffected of all, will not respond to organised activities in the pueblo. They will want to do things where they live – it’s not about getting a bus and ‘get yourself down to The Old Instituto – Youth Club!’ We have to come up with ideas and provide facilities where the problem exists.
We have launched this project on Friday 1st June 2007 – on Caz’s Friday Fever Show Radio San Miguel 107.4fm Global. Yes, we are global – with a link on the website to this important Municipal Radio Station and if you ask the Radio Director, Lito, he will tell you what a growing audience our programmes in English are getting. That means more people will be aware of this important project. Kevin Matthews of Puressence is supporting our project.
The Radio Team wants your help and if you are interested in this project contact us – that’s
David, Steve ‘’DJ CHENERY’ or Caz ‘The Barber of Quesada’
and tell us what you can do. If you want to start a band tell us, we might be able to help. Call us at Radio San Miguel on (+34) 662 060 717 or email

Tuesday Live is not supported by the official guide website -
We are happy to promote all the programmes on Radio San Miguel, in the same way that
promotion is extended to every business and activity in SMdS, quite gratuitously. You would have all the same information about that programme as you do about every other but the current situation, a disappointing one, is at the behest of the Tuesday Live programme makers. |
