A Day of Football at San Miguel Stadium sponsored by Diputacion
de Alicante, from RTN's Louise Clarke featured in Round Town News 30 May

It has often been said that the International language of football brings people from all nationalities together in harmony. Sometimes of course this isn’t quite the case, but more often than not, the well loved sport can be used to help people join together for the same passionate cause. This week, the Alicante Diputacion held its sixth annual ‘Football Day’ in San Miguel de Salinas. The event, which brought together seven and eight year old boys and girls, from primary schools in San Miguel, Albatera, Orihuela, Dolores, Daya Nueva and Benijofar, saw over 650 children play short games of three-a-side football on small tailor made pitches at the San Miguel de Salinas Football Ground. There were 114 teams altogether competing for Terra Mitica tickets and the overall trophy.
The sun was shining, which recently has been a rarity and all the kids had fantastic time. They were provided with a brightly coloured t-shirt and hat, depending on what team they were playing for and what school they were in and for a snack they received a sandwich, a drink and a piece of fruit; all courtesy of the Diputacion de Alicante.

 |
| The only
instructions that they were given by their teachers all day was to go
out there, play some football and have lots of fun! The kids all had a great time playing football at the sixth annual ‘Football Day’

Meet The LA OFICINA Pool Team from
Bar La Oficina, Restaurant and Motel Complex on The CV 951 Road to Torremendo.
When the team was launched they struggled to get
5 players together for a pool team but now they have a squad of 15 players signed up for the
2007/2008 season. They play one game at home and the next week away and are
currently fifth in the league of ten similar bars that are signed up in the Orihuela Costa area.
They have a great time and enjoy getting out to see the other bars, meet
new friends and have a laugh. |

'The War of the Roses' - The First San Miguel Fitness Trophy at The Fútbol Stadium in San Miguel de Salinas
on Saturday 14 October 2006 was another first for
SMdS
Believe SMdS when we tell you this match could not have taken place without the support of
the Mayor, ANGEL SAÉZ HUERTAS, who attended to open the match. He told the players and
a great audience that he was mystified by the game but was delighted to see more use of the town’s facilities by the foreign community and would like to encourage more matches in the future. It was a great match and, of course the result was really quite immaterial, it was a great social event involving ALL the community. |

WALKING GROUPS
The most frequently requested exercise enquiry is for Walking Groups - if you have one
or plan one in SMdS please tell us!
We have featured this Local Walking Group that meets weekly for walks in the Campo around San Miguel de Salinas.
Carol and Jim have run this group for a couple of
years but it is now oversubscribed - ideally grops
are better if there's about 20 walkers of roughly
the same fitness who do it for the same
purpose...some are more athletic some are more
rambling. Walking is healthy
and sociable and if you want to start a group tell
us and we will publish the details. |

This is our map of the coastline with the main beaches
marked. Of course we haven't got any beaches in San Miguel de Salinas...we can't sit up on the hillside
and look at the whole coastline and have a beach too! But now the autumn
is here there are plenty of great walks along the coastal path.
Our Map follows the coastline from Torrevieja in the north to Pilar de la Horadada in the south.
It is an interesting coastline with long sandy beaches (Las Playas) and coves (Las Calas) bordered by rocky outcrops (Las Puntas). There are several busy harbours (Puertos) providing haven for
yachts and other watersport activities.
For several stretches down the length of our map there are many promenades that will eventually form a single coastal path.
Access to beaches is almost always via the N332 Coastal Road and most are well signposted.

For the Spanish, sport and leisure are definitely weekend pursuits and one of the most important in Spain is Football or Fútbol, which has an even greater national following than in Britain. Around 300,000 spectators regularly attend the games in the Primera División and millions more follow the games on television. And it's no exception in San Miguel de Salinas, with (Alevines (10-11yrs.) Infantiles (12-14yrs.) Cadetes (14-16yrs.).
