RTN Helps with Alicante University Research By Louise Clarke
When Alicante University contacted Round
Town News to ask us to help them with some
research, we were only too delighted to
help. Members of the University’s Tourism
Research team are currently conducting
research on behalf of the Town Hall in San
Miguel de Salinas in a bid to determine
whether or not there is tourism potential in
the pueblo.

Isobel Rodriguez
Sanchez is heading the project and she invited RTN to
give our opinions on the subject and to offer ideas about
how best to market the town. The invitation comes as a direct
result of the Integration Debate that we are currently
holding on our website -
www.roundtownnews.com and follows the keen interest
that the Diputacion of Alicante has had with the debate.
Warts and All
San Miguel de Salinas Town Hall are keen to promote the town and highlight the potential that the pueblo has with regards to becoming a tourist attraction. RTN thought that this is a particularly positive move by the administration and was keen to let them know, warts and all, everything that is good and bad about the town. We started off by highlighting the good things about the town. These included the magnificent Castillo de Conesa, the caves and the derelict windmill which would benefit immensely from renovation, with the possibility of making it into a working monument; ideal for visits by people interested in the working history of the area. There are an abundance of very talented individuals in the town whose talents must be recognised. These people include the lace making ladies of the town and the man who farms honey from his own bees in the centre of the town and sells it from his garage. There are many characters in the town who could tell a tale or two and the elder generation of the pueblo have had such fascinating experiences, especially during the Franco era, that it would be such a shame if their experiences weren’t told.
Conservation
RTN was told about the imminent plans to make part of the municipality into a protected national park. RTN is thoroughly supportive of this positive move and looks forward to being able to promote the proposed bike and horse trails as well as the bird watching and wildlife conservation areas. We will keep you updated on all these plans as we get more information. We discussed the possibility of a museum in the town and to coincide special events and coffee mornings with market day which takes place in the town on a Wednesday. We also suggested utilising the Casa de Cultura more and allowing more mixed nationality groups to use the building in a bid to improve and facilitate better integration. The downside to all these positive suggestions was that unfortunately, unless you are lucky enough and rich enough to afford the only taxi that operates in the town, public transport into and out of the town is appalling. The urbanisations of Torrestrella, Communicaciones, El Galan, Blue Hill and Blue Lagoon are so isolated from the town that the only way that you can get to it is by car and if you don’t have a car, well, you are basically stranded. Also this lack of transport has a detrimental effect on the businesses in the town, in particular bars and restaurants. How many extra people would visit the town during the evening, to have a meal and a few drinks, if there was reliable public transport? After an hour of conversation, which was recorded so that every detail could be noted, RTN was thanked for its contribution. Let’s hope that the Town Hall take note of the researcher’s findings and that San Miguel de Salinas becomes a town that people want to and, more importantly, are able to visit without having to use a car. RTN will keep you updated on the findings of this research and will be meeting with the Mayor of San Miguel in the near future to find out his views on the project’s outcome.

The Municipalities of Algorfa, Benferri, Benijófar, Bigastro, Jacarilla, Los Montesinos, San Isidro, San Fulgencio and
San Miguel of Salinas are all working together in a joint venture to promote The Vega Baja as a tourist destination. The Association had also attended The International Fair of Tourism in Madrid in January 2006 and impressed both the public and the industry. |
Francisco José Walls Quesada, president of the Association of Economic Promotion emphasizes that this project is also about promoting the interior parts of the region, the village municipalities, with efforts made, through good investment, to invigorate all aspects of tourism and to maximize the benefits. Amongst the thousands of visitors to the Association’s stand was The Minister for Tourism Dña. Milagrosa Martínez who congratulated them for their excellent presentation of specially produced conference material with images of the area. All the visitors were treated to gastronomic samples and promotional literature. |

Meet Captain Patrick
Moran and First Officer Aidan Killoran of
Ryanair. They spend a good deal of their working
days flying passengers from UK Airports to European
Destinations including Alicante and Murcia...they
are amongst our partners in the growth of the
Tourist Industry as their Company - Ryanair - offers
some of the cheapest flights to the Costas.
Patrick and Aidan told
us that they really enjoy their time in the air
flying in the new fleet of 737s even when, as on
this occasion, they had to battle to find a slot,
dodge French airspace due to an ATC's 'lightning
strike' and still get their passengers in 15 minutes
ahead of schedule. They promised to check out the
website to find their smiling faces! Thanks guys! |

| As work nears completion of the
renovation of the Old Town Hall as a Foreigners Information
Centre coupled with a Tourist and Visitor Centre
for San Miguel de Salinas the Ayuntamiento prepares new information sheets
covering the 'most frequently asked questions'. They
hope to streamline a number of procedures for the
increasing foreign population of the town.
Originally built in 1840, the facade of this important
building has been restored and the interior has been modernized. It is expected
to open in the next two months. |
